Chinatown Never Looked So Good

Film crews are constantly capturing footage around the city; Chinatown and the Lower East Side are no exception. About a year ago, the crew of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice spent three weeks staked out on my street, choreographing nightly Chinese New Year parades and dumping rainbow confetti by the ton.

Sure, the filming was a bit of an inconvenience, but that was mostly outweighed by the bragging rights that came with it and the fact that every day on my way home from work I got to walk onto the set while the star struck neighbors on the other side of the barricade looked on longingly.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice–ring a bell? Yes, the classic Disney short from Fantasia where Mickey Mouse tries to be sorcerer for a night, bringing dusty brooms to life and ordering them around with sloshing buckets of water. Well, in this live action ‘resurrection‘ of the piece, Nic Cage takes on the role of the sorcerer and runs around New York  City with a tweeny-looking apprentice.

How this movie is even remotely related to the original, God only knows, but I suppose the jury is out until this Jerry Bruckheimer joint hits theatres in July. I will say, though, that the trailer makes my street look damn good. If only glowing red lanterns were an everyday affair in the real Chinatown.
